Frequently Asked Questions

The season for the amazing Mobula Rays, also known as Jumping Rays or Devil Rays, begins in April and runs through the end of July each year. The season for the Giant Mantas begins in August and runs into mid December.

We frequently experience the fantastic Mobula rays, also known as Jumping Rays or Devil Rays, in the wild from around April through July. These amazing rays tend to congregate close to Espiritu Santo island. Our Expedition for Mobula Rays is an exciting journey that includes visiting beaches, bays and coves on Espiritu Santo island. Normally, there is also time for kayaking, paddle boards, snorkeling with tropical fish and exploring remote island beaches. We tend to see these wonderful creatures as they jump out of the water during their merging season into larger schools called a fever. Our estimate for seeing these remarkable animals is about 70% during the season.

The Giant Manta season typically runs from August through November concurrent with the Mobula ray season. These gentle, but massive rays, tend to be more elusive, and harder to spot. They rarely jump out of the water. Instead they normally glide serenely around La Reina Reef, which is an hour or two further by boat from where the mobula rays tend to gather. As we are operating in open ocean waters, predicting exactly where the rays will be at any given time is a best guess based on years of experience in local waters. Thus, this experience tells us where to expect rays will likely be traveling and gathering at certain times of the year, but it is no guarantee that we will find them on any given day. Our estimate for seeing these mysterious gentle giants is about 40% on any given day during the season.

As a surprise to almost everyone, the last two years in a row, several giant mantas visited the whale shark park filtering plankton right alongside the whale sharks. This suggests that giant mantas may be expanding their cruising grounds into swaths of water closer to where the mobula rays tend to merge into mega schools called a fever in the months just prior to when the giant mantas arrive.

Winds and waves in the Cabo area are RARELY a good indicator of winds and waves in La Paz. The water in the La Paz area is usually swimmable. Certainly, more so than in the Cabo area. We are careful to examine forecasts daily, but wave heights and wind forecasts are sometimes wrong. When we are required to reschedule, usually a decision made by the Port Captain’s office, we endeavor to get you out the next day or as soon thereafter as possible.
If we believe the port will close on a given day or days, based on weather forecasts for the area you are due to visit, we will reach out to you beforehand to reschedule. Temperature and overcast do not restrict nautical activities, forecast wind speed, and wave heights can.
We provide wetsuits and shorties in adult sizes for when it’s cold. We have some children’s sizes as well. On board, we have private bathrooms with fresh hot water showers and clean towels.
